Kilkenny Arts Festival 8th - 18th August 2024

The Kilkenny Arts Festival takes place this year from 8th-18th August. Some stand-out features include the European premiere of Emma O’Halloran’s operas "Trade" and "Mary Motorhead," and the Irish premiere of Jóhann Jóhannsson's "DRONE MASS." Kilkenny Castle will host "Light Up The Castle," a new spectacle by Fictions Picture Company.


Musical highlights include the Irish premiere of Errollyn Wallen’s "Dances for Orchestra," performed by the Irish Chamber Orchestra, and contemporary classical music by Mari Samuelsen and the RTÉ Concert Orchestra, featuring works by Arvo Pärt, Nils Frahm, Bryce Dessner, Philip Glass, and Max Richter. Philip Glass' compositions are prominently featured, with performances by the Carducci String Quartet, pianist Máire Carroll, harpist Lavinia Meijer, and the Crash Ensemble.


Piano recitals at St. John’s Priory feature Finghin Collins, Máire Carroll, and Pavel Kolesnikov & Samson Tsoy, with works by Chopin, Schumann, Stravinsky, Bach, and Beethoven.


The Marble City Sessions showcase Martin Hayes and various artists, while headline concerts include Lisa O’Neil, Mick Flannery, This is the Kit, and Richard Dawson. Theatre partners Rough Magic present new works by Peter Hanly and Martin 'Beanz' Warde.


Niall Vallely's "78 Revolutions" explores early Irish traditional music recordings. The "Migration Sonatina" project by John Scott and Irish Modern Dance Theatre returns, and installations include "A Mother’s Voice" by Linda and Irene Buckley.


Literature events feature Martina Evans, Paul Muldoon, Fintan O’Toole, and Catherine Marshall. Art exhibitions include Liane Lang’s "Deep Time Dip" and Helen Comerford’s retrospective "A Legacy." The Festival Gallery showcases Ros Costigan’s photography and the KCAT Studio's international group show "Re-Connection." Barnstorm Theatre presents "You’ll See" for children.
